Excerpt from 35mm Pressed Flower Tests by C. Díaz (2016)
As sunlight filters through heavy rainclouds, we enthusiastically welcome the start of the energetic new year and the official re-opening of our space to the public. Although we have been on break, we still found ourselves yearning to take action. Action against systemic oppression and violent occupation, and action within ourselves through internal reframing and check-ins of what we were most excited about offering our community this year. The inspiration and the work that comes with actualizing these dreams is nonstop, and we take up the challenge of conjuring the pre-utopia with great devotion and care.
This month, we are:
- starting 2 monthly filmmaker-centric programs that will run through the summer (Gregg Araki’s TEENAGE APOCALYPSE trilogy by @santana.peralez & LUSH VISUALS: FILMS OF WONG KAR-WAI by @camerafino)
- hosting 2 special screenings (MISSING IN BROOKS COUNTY & GIORGIO MORODER’S METROPOLIS, the latter hosted by @martinpena_111)
- bringing back our weekly Wednesday programming starting with CINEMA IFTAR (a free sundown meal and screening event for the last Wednesday of Ramadan) and introducing our monthly VHS ROULETTE nights, where a lucky audience member will pick a film we watch, and openly discuss--especially if it sucks!
- Also screening on Wednesdays this month are Takeshi Kitano’s masterful take on the classic blind swordsman character, ZATOICHI, and the compelling animated love letter to Mother Nature, FERNGULLY: THE LAST RAINFOREST.
This month, we are also introducing OPEN STUDIO HOURS! Feel free to visit the space, work on projects, check out equipment, or transfer media during these hours:
With all this *NEW NEW* and changing of the season, we are charged up and ready to see what unfolds this month at our HQ & beyond. We hope to see you at an event (or 2 or 4!) this month! Keep an eye out for infrmation about our very own Artists In Radical Residency (AIRR) program! Coming Soon!
