The Flaherty Film Seminar is an annual gathering of filmmakers, scholars, students, curators, critics, archivists, and cinephiles coming together for an immersive, week-long program of film screenings, in-depth discussions, artist talks, installations, and/or performances around a theme. The Flaherty occupies a unique space within the non-fiction film ecosystem, one where artists and audiences are asked to confront the core of the creative process itself – independent of both social agenda and industry trends - to explore film as a pure expression of our complex humanity, and to challenge filmmakers to push the limits of the medium itself. For almost seven decades, the Flaherty Film Seminar has been firmly established as a one-of-a-kind institution that seeks to encourage filmmakers and other artists to explore the potential of the moving image.
This year’s seminar is titled “To Commune,” programmed by May Adadol Ingawanij and Julian Ross, and takes place from June 27 - July 2 2024 in Salaya, Thailand. A little about this year's theme from May and Julian:
Our program seeks to explore how contemporary filmmakers and moving image artists are expanding the imaginative possibilities of communing through documentary forms. We want to highlight how filmmakers and artists, especially those connected to the Global South, are inheriting surprising legacies of historical efforts to commune. We’re intrigued by artistic explorations of communal capacities in spaces and situations such as the classroom, the ritual, the carnival, the film set, the potent site, the gathering, and the protest.
ENTRE will be hosting an in-person gathering on Wednesday July 17th for RGV film enthusiasts, artists, scholars and filmmakers who wish to experience the seminar’s programming and participate in discussion around the films screened. Although the in-person seminar will have concluded, we will continue with the seminar’s philosophy of non-preconception and will not be sharing information about the films before the screening. We ask that you come with an open and curious mind and the enthusiasm to participate in a post-screening discussion facilitated by ENTRE co-founder, C. Díaz.
If you would like to join us, please sign up via the RSVP form here (choose the Harlingen, TX location from drop-down menu). Our screening is free to attend and we encourage folks to bring their favorite beverages and snacks to share with the group.
We hope to see you then!
